Gary L. Bagley

Gary grew up in the small community of Buford in northeast Georgia. Following high school, he earned a B.A. in Music Education from Furman University, Greenville, South Carolina, and the Master of Divinity and the Doctor of Ministry degrees from the School of Theology at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, studying under George Buttrick, Wayne Oates, and John Claypool. Post graduate studies include a two-year Clinical Pastoral Education Internship at Georgia Baptist Medical Center, numerous Development Seminars including the University of Indiana’s School of Philanthropy’s basic fundraising course, and Level I of Interim Pastoral Ministry.

Dr. Bagley’s church-related experience includes twenty-three years of pastoral ministry in the states of South Carolina, Florida, Mississippi, and Georgia, two years of hospital chaplaincy, and several years as Director of Development and Seminary Relations at Columbia Theological Seminary.

Gary and his wife, Jennifer, have four adult children, four grandchildren, plus Scout, Sidney, and Alley—their Brittany Spaniel, Golden Retriever, and alley cat. Jennifer is a vice president and college consultant with Stein Communications of Atlanta, Georgia.

In addition to many of the outdoor sports, Gary has a longtime hobby of collecting and restoring mechanical musical instruments. He and Jennifer enjoy reading, concerts, the beach, and golfing in their spare time.

Sarah McGinnis
Office Manager

Sarah has been an integral part of the HPC staff since 2005, serving as Office Manager and publications specialist, which combine her skills and make good use of her training and experience.

She earned a BA in Communication and Information Sciences from the University of Alabama, majoring in journalism. Before working at Hilton Presbyterian, Sarah held many leadership positions, including editorial work with The Birmingham News, a pastry chef position at 99 Main Restaurant, and a managerial role with Target Corporation. Before coming to Hilton, she worked as a substitute teacher.
She and her husband, Bryan, have four girls. She enjoys baking, reading, and snowboarding and going to the beach with her family.

Lois Reese
Music Director

Lois is a native of Reading, PA. Her husband, Al, recently retired from the Army after 21 years. He has served as a trumpet player at Ft. Meade, MD, Ft. Monroe, VA, and at the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY. They liked the Tidewater area so much they decided to come back for "retirement." While living in Hampton in the early '90s, Lois served as the music director at Kirkwood Presbyterian Church in Yorktown.

Lois and Al spent eleven years at West Point. They served together at First Presbyterian Church in Monroe, NY. Lois directed adults, youth and children's singing choirs and adult handbell choir. She was actively involved in the Logos youth program.

Also while in New York, Lois was bitten by the opera bug. She performed with Hudson Opera Theatre in New Jersey and Delaware Valley Opera and Festival Theatre in New York. Lois currently sings in the chorus with Virginia Opera. In addition, she is an avid handbell enthusiast and rings with the Virginia Handbell Consort.

Lois has been a music teacher for 10 years and is currently the music specialist at Trinity Lutheran School. Lois holds a bachelor's degree in music education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a master's in church music from Concordia University Wisconsin.

Doris Slagle
Organist
Doris Slagle and her husband, Charles, have been members of Hilton Presbyterian since 1972. In August, 1999, Doris began as interim organist and accepted the organist position in 2000. Before joining the HPC staff, Doris taught middle school math in Newport News and worked part-time as a tutor in the AVID program.

Doris earned her AB from King College in Bristol, TN, majoring in mathematics; she took organ lessons while attending college and sang in the a capella choir. She also studied under Brad Norris of St. Andrews Episcopal Church for two years before becoming organist at HPC.

She and Charles are proud parents of a son, Eric, who lives with his wife, Angie and their three children, Aidan, Emma, and Rose; and a daughter, Angela and her husband, Nat.

Heather Wright
Treasurer

Heather's service with Hilton Presbyterian began after leadership with accounting firms in both Virginia and her native Pensacola, Florida. She earned her bachelors degree from The University of West Florida, where she served with the national honors fraternity for financial information professionals and earned recognition and awards for her scholastic performance.

Heather's interests include travel, cooking, reading, and enjoying the great outdoors. Her husband, Lawson, is in the US Air Force stationed at Langley AFB. They have four children.

Betty Ann Pagels
Preschool Director

Betty Ann Pagels has been the Hilton Presbyterian Preschool director since 1986. She teaches our students who come 5 days per week, as well as coordinating our preschool program. Betty Ann is a graduate of the College of William & Mary with a BA in Elementary Education, certified to teach nursery/kindergarten through grade 7. She has taught in Hampton Public Schools and in the children's programs of several Christian organizations. She has directed children's choirs and sings with her church choir. Betty Ann and her husband, Matt, are parents of three grown daughters, who all came to preschool here at Hilton Presbyterian. The tradition continues with granddaughter Gemma, who began attending in 2007.

Wilbert Massenburg
Custodian
Wilbert Massenburg has served at HPC custodian since 1971. Previous to his work here, he worked at the Mariner's Museum. He and his wife, Lucille, have five grown children.
